Abstract

There are three primary considerations in the evaluation of mechanical mitral valve prostheses:
  1. 1

Is there evidence of an anatomic abnormality suggesting the presence of vegetation, thrombus, or abscess?

  2. 2

Is antegrade flow impeded with a resultant functional stenosis?

  3. 3

Is there evidence of systolic regurgitation through a valvular or paravalvular leak?
