Abstract

In the early 1970s, ultrasonic probes were placed in the esophagus to monitor the blood velocity in the descending aorta, and for measurement of the aortic diameter to estimate the volumetric flow in the descending aorta [1–6]. Later [7–10], a mechanically scanned beam was used for two-dimensional (2-D) ultrasound backscatter imaging of the heart. A 10-MHz linear array mounted on the tip of a gastroscope was reported [11, 12], but the system has had limited application for cardiac imaging, partly because of the field of view and the lack of any ability to use lower frequencies. A phased array transducer mounted on the tip of a gastroscope for transesophageal imaging of the heart was first reported in 1981 [13, 14].
