Spine and Spinal Cord

Abstract

Although assessment of the integrity of the fetal spine should be part of any ultrasound examination, it can present significant problems (Miskin et al. 1979; Leucht et al. 1979; Hansmann et al. 1985). The difficulties are illustrated by reports of false-negative diagnoses even at Stage 3 facilities (Hansmann and Gembruch 1984). To perform an adequate sonographic assessment of the fetal spine, it is necessary to understand several basic ontogenic and anatomic concepts.
