Neutron Scattering and Infrared Spectroscopy of H2O Molecules Isolated in Diverse Cryogenic Matrices
Conference paper
Abstract
In solid and liquid phases as well as in solutions water molecules are generally strongly influenced by intermolecular potentials related to hydrogen bonding or other interactions. Rotations of single particles have typically not been observed under these conditions. In solid rare gas matrices, however, the interaction of cage atoms with isolated H2O molecules is weak enough to allow hindered rotation which was evidenced by various authors [1–3]. This is so far the only example of a hindered asymetric rotor as opposed to the large number of symmetric top molecules for which rotational modes were reported in condensed phases [4].
