Interactions of Thyroid Hormone and Tricyclic Antidepressants on Rat Brain β-Adrenoceptor Function
Abstract
L-triiodothyronine (T3) and desipramine (DMI) are known separately to affect β-adrenoceptor numbers in rat brain (Atterwill et al. 1984; Crews et al. 1981), and it is thought that the decrease in number produced by DMI correlates with its therapeutic actions (Racagni and Brunello 1984). Since a single administration of T3 can be useful as an adjunct to tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) therapy (Prange et al. 1984), the following study examined the interaction between T3 and DMI in inducing changes in rat brain β-adrenoceptors, in the hope of identifying a possible mechanism to explain the clinical observations.
