The Thalidomide Hypothesis: How It Was Found and Tested

Abstract

The first cases of an apparently new type of phocomelia were published by Weidenbach (1959) and by Kosenow and Pfeiffer (1960). While these authors realized that their cases were exceptional, they did not refer to any increase in similar cases, nor did they discuss etiology. Only after a few years was it discovered that the mothers of these patients had taken thalidomide in early pregnancy.
