Abstract

The Maltese Islands are a small archipelago situated in the centre of the Mediterranean about 89 km south of Sicily and about 334 km north of the Libyan coast, at approximately 36°N and 14°E. The principal islands are Malta (249 sq. km.), Gozo (70 sq. km.) and Comino (2.6 sq. km.). There are also two other smaller, but ornithologically important, islets, Cominotto and Filfla.
