Abstract

Since 1983, French hospitals have been subjected to a major reform which has been principally concerned with new methods of financing and the reorganisation of medical services (which have been replaced by departments focussing on technological and pathological groupings). In the light of recent studies by LAWRENCE P on industrial organisations, the present paper analyses under what conditions the internal reorganisation of the hospital can, as well as meeting the cost containment objective of the governement, also provide an adaptive model for the hospital confronted with a complex and changing environment.
