Abstract

Urgent reintervention is sometimes necessary after open-heart surgery. Massive exsanguinating bleeding can occur in the first hours or days after operation; surgical reexploration might be necessary in a patient too unstable to be moved into the operating room (OR), and in some cases, the primary closure of sternotomy will not be tolerated after prolonged open-heart procedures. A concept of surgery in intensive care unit (ICU) was developed to deal with such emergencies; the following communication relates our experience with this extreme and rare group of patients since 1977.
