Separate and Combined Effects on Intracranial Pressure of Changes in PO2 and PCO2

Abstract
The effects of hypoxia and of hypercapnia in raising intracranial pressure (ICP)by virtue of vasodilatation are well known. The effects of each and of arterial blood pressure (BP) on CBF are well documented. It is less clear how oxygen and CO 2 interact in ICP when they change simultaneously in the same or opposite directions; also their separate and combined effects on ICP are likely to be different according to whether or not they cause any alterations in BP.
