Abstract

Stromatolites of the South African Precambrian have been abundantly described. In 1935 Young compared the stromatolites of the Transvaal Dolomite with recent algal structures, at that time discovered by Black (1933) in the Bahamas. Truswell and Eriksson (1972, 1973,1974) and Button (1971,1973) gave a valuable classification of these Precambrian stromatolites and typified them as tidal-flat associations.
