Vascular Effects of Potassium in Physiologic Concentration Range
Chapter
Abstract
It has been known for about 30 years that changes in the extracellular K+-concentration influence the vascular tone in vivo as well as in vitro even in the range between zero and 15 mM (8, 12, 13). A decrease in K+ increases the tone of vascular smooth muscle, and an increase has a dilating effect. The maximum effectiveness of changes in the K+ concentration has been observed in the isolated artery in the range between 2 and 6 mM (12, 13).
