Abstract

The galactose-binding protein (GBP) was first isolated by Anraku, and he suggested that GBP was involved in galactose transport in Escherichia coli (Anraku, 1968). The study of galactose transport in this organism is complicated by the existence of at least six transport systems with specificity for galactose (Kalckar, 1971; Rotman et al., 1968). This overlap made the design of selection procedures needed to obtain well defined mutants rather complex. Since no well characterized mutants were available, and since no other galactose derivatives were checked for binding, it was not possible at this time to tell which transport system required GBP.
