Uranium and Heavy Metals in Permian Sandstones Near Bolzano (Northern Italy)

Abstract

The discovery of sedimentary galena concentrations in Permian sandstones of Alto Adige (Northern Italy) by means of mineralogical alluvial prospection promoted wide scale exploration in the whole basin of Bolzano. This search confirmed the wide extent and importance of lead mineralization. At the moment, the great extent of the examined basin does not allow us to make any general minerogenetic conclusions, though hypotheses on the formational environment and ore genesis of the first discovered occurrence have been made.

In this work, a general and synthetic description of the first discovery and a short presentation of other mineralizations found both in the Permian sandstones and in the “Tregiovo Formation” are reported.

The authors intend to study the complexity of the mineralizations by means of paleo- geographic criteria in the light of the general sedimentological development of the Permian basin of Alto Adige. The aim of the present work is simply to make some details known and to point out the interest in this type of mineralization in a region which, up to now, has been intensively studied from a minerogenetic point of view.
