Summary

This paper outlines the Italian situation in the field of the efficient use of electricity in motors and drives, as a result of a continuous activity of study and research, started in 1980. An outline of future programs in also described.

The results of this study proved to be a useful support for the implementation of energy saving policies and the technological development of the electric motor, for which motor manufacturers remain one of the major decision factors.

Awareness campaigns must certainly be targeted towards all the people involved in decision-making; furthermore, given the particular market characteristics and the multinational structure of the major manufacturers, any action aiming to produce high efficiency motors should be coordinated at least within a European program.

Some actions, which mainly concern national operators within the general framework of DSM strategies, have been already undertaken, like for instance education and training and technical assistance. Further actions have been planned and their coordination within European programs is strongly encouraged.
