Abstract

Proliferative ability and resistance to chemotherapy (CHT) seem to be the major facilities of leukemic blast cells in relation to outcome of therapy. We have studied the expression of the myc gene in 27 de novo and 23 pretreated acute leukemia (AL) patients by hybridization in situ. It appeares that the predominant expression level of the mdr-1 gene (above the myc gene) correlates to resistance. The opposite situation (when the myc gene is predominant) correlates to tumor lytic syndrome and early death (ED) on CHT. Absence of overexpression of both mdr-1 and the myc gene is the most favorable type in relation to achieving complete remission (CR).
