Ultrasound Imaging of the Ankle
Abstract
The recent development of high-resolution electronic transducers has increased the capability of ultrasound (US) to evaluate the normal structures of the musculoskeletal system as well as to detect and characterize subtle pathologic changes (Martinoli et al. 1999). US of the ankle has received increasing attention in recent years (Thermann et al. 1992; Cchem et al. 1993). Nowadays, it is considered an excellent modality for the assessment of a variety of ankle and foot diseases (Fessel et al. 1998; Fessel and van Holsbeeck 1999; Morvan et al. 2000) and can often replace MRI in the assessment of tendon disorders (Rockett et al. 1999).
