Abstract

The exact mechanisms responsible for the development of port-site recurrences within the abdominal wall are still unclear. Such abdominal wall recurrences can occur or not in close proximity with the tumor. In any case, it has to be assumed that, for a port-site recurrence to develop, tumor cells must be present within the abdominal cavity (or disseminated during surgery by various mechanisms), and transported into the site of recurrence (hereafter the port-site), where these cells finally find conditions for growth.
