Abstract
In 1950, I completed the requirements for the D.Sc. degree at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Walter Kohn arrived in the summer as a new Assistant Professor. We both were undergraduates at University of Toronto. I did not know him there but I worked in the Department of Applied Mathematics for a master’s degree where he had finished several years previously. He had a giant reputation for a student.
