Abstract
Actin filaments, microtubules and intermediate filaments which build up the cytoskeletal network responsible for the mechanical properties of cells are at the relevant length scales (a few microns at most) all semiflexible polymers. In contrast to flexible polymers the persistence length of these polymers is of the same order of magnitude as their total contour length The statistical mechanics of such macromolecules can not be understood from the conformational entropy alone but depends crucially on the bending stiffness of the filament.
