Adenoviruses and herpes simplex virus, with particular reference to intracellular crystals
Abstract
The initial observation of crystals associated with a viral infection was made by Bunting (1), in 1953, during electron microscopic studies of human skin papillomata. Inspection of the published micrographs leads one to agree with the author that the intranuclear arrays of particles probably represent viral crystals. Unfortunately, the thickness of the sections precluded sufficient resolution to determine whether the particles posses internal structure. Although further investigation should be carried out with techniques currently available, the acquisition of material suitable for examination of developmental stages, which contribute important information to our understanding of any virus, is rendered difficult by virtue of the fact that no experimental animal or tissue culture system has been found which is capable of supporting growth of the papilloma virus.
