Radiation Therapy of Tumors of the Liver
Abstract
The most important observation about irradiation of the liver is that its functions are not detectably impaired by doses up to 6000 rads fractionated over 6 to 8 weeks. Indeed, if the initial liver function tests show impairment, as is usually the case when patients with tumors of the liver are considered for radiation therapy, these various tests generally show improving functions during treatment and often for several weeks after its completion. Thus, there is no tumor of the liver, primary or metastatic, which is unsuitable for irradiation because of the risk of damage to the normal liver being greater than the probability of tumor regression.
