Code Comparison and Verification for Patient-Specific Three-Dimensional Treatment Planning in Regional Hyperthermia
Abstract
A new generation of annular-phased-array systems has been in clinical use since 1988 (BSD-2000, BSD Medical Corp., Salt Lake City, Utah). The power deposition pattern inside the body is generated by four antenna pairs in a ring applicator of 60 cm diameter, with variation in phases/amplitudes of channels, frequency (70–110 MHz), and patient position possible. In principle, the treatment system is able to match the specific absorption rate (SAR) to an individual tumor case. However, for further development of radiofrequency hyperthermia technology, an improvement in planning and phantom techniques is required.
