Methods for Blood Usage Reduction During Cardiac Surgery
Conference paper
Abstract
Historically, blood transfusion requirements during cardiac surgery have been related to problems involving the usage of heart-lung bypass. Heat exchangers caused viscosity changes and slugging which resulted in denaturization of proteins and severe coagulopathy. The effect of generating particulate matter emboli caused pump lung syndrome. Early design concepts of heart-lung machines required large volumes of fresh heparinized blood.
