Wachstum und Proliferation kultivierter Zellen erfolgt unter kontrollierten In-vitro-Bedingungen. Allerdings wird mit der Verwendung von Serum ein undefinierter Medienzusatz in die ansonsten chemisch definierten Kulturbedingungen eingebracht.
