Plane One-Dimensional Shock Waves
A plane one-dimensional shock wave goes from one stress and compression level (usually zero) to a higher stress and compression level in an almost discontinuous jump as a function of time as shown in Fig. 2.1. It can have a rise time (usually small fractions of a microsecond) to the front. It travels faster than the speed of sound in the medium ahead of the shock (George Duvall notes from shock wave class given at WSU, Personal communication, 1969)  (i.e. shock waves are supersonic).
