The Biomedical Engineering Society of South Africa (BESSA)

Abstract

We salute the IFMBE on reaching its 50th year of service. It is for us also a reason to celebrate because 2008 marked the 30th anniversary of BESSA’s establishment.

Biomedical Engineering was a young and vital field in South Africa in the 1970s and the first academic programme in BME was established, significantly, at the University of Cape Town Medical School in late 1972, by Mickey Milner (who is well known in the IFMBE as a past president).
