A Numeric Study of the Effects of Turbulent Flow
Introduction
Mixing is one of the controlling factors for the afterburning of volatile chemical species released during the detonation of a wide variety of non-ideal explosives. Numerical calculations of such afterburning must provide a realistic mixing model in order to accurately represent the physics and chemistry of the energy release in both space and time. In this study, we quantify the effects of zone resolution and of a realistic sub-grid model for turbulence on fluid mixing. The basic Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) differencing method used is conservative of mass, momentum and energy and is fully second order in space and time. Numerical mixing is held to the magnitude of third order terms. Mixing is directly calculated at the resolution of the zoning and the k-ε turbulence model is used to describe the subzone mixing.
