Contrast Medium Injection in MSCT: Present Status and Future Perspectives
Abstract
In the past years, we have assisted with several technical developments which have totally changed the performances of computed tomography (CT) equipment. Starting from the early 1970s, the scan time was several minutes, the reconstruction time was almost 1 min, the minimum slice thickness was more than 1 cm, the matrix was limited and the contrast resolution was poor. By the late 1990s and the year 2000, there were dramatic improvements in terms of speed of acquisition and reconstruction with a reduction in slice thickness to less than 1 mm and a significant increase in spatial resolution. These technical improvements also meant the possibility to perform new types of studies with CT previously not possible, such as high-resolution dynamic evaluation of parenchymal organs and lesions and non-invasive angiographies.
