Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia Type II in Three Children and Anticoagulant Therapy with Org 10172 (Orgaran)

Abstract

In adults, untreated heparin-induced thrombocytopenia type II (HIT type II) with complicating thrombosis has been associated with the death of the patient in up to 28% of cases [4]. For this reason in adults, prompt cessation of heparin and continuance of anticoagulation with Org 10172 (danaparoid sodium, Orgaran) or recombinant hirudin (Refludan) is recommended if thrombocytopenia or a new thrombo embolic event or progression of existing thrombosis has been developed and HIT type II must be suspected [2]. In children with HIT type II, Orgaran has been used only in a few single cases. We report on three children with deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and HIT type II in whom anticoagulant therapy was provided with Orgaran.
