Abstract

Measuring star positions has a long history. It’s a branch of astronomy that even has its own name—astrometry, the accurate measurement of the positions of celestial bodies. Since measuring the positions of the stars was one of the few investigations of the heavens open to the ancients, astronomy and astrometry were largely synonymous until a century ago, when other types of investigation of the stars became possible.
