Abstract

We have developed a novel waveguide microgripper capable of physically grasping a microobject while simultaneously delivering and collecting light through its waveguide arms. This capability allows extensive optical characterization of the structure being held such as transmission, reflection or fluorescence. Optical fibers connected to the device deliver laser light and collect transmission or fluorescence using a photodetector or a spectrometer. The optical characterization of microobjects using this device will be demonstrated. Detection of fluorescence from quantum dot (QD) labeled microobjects will be presented.
