Assessing the Learners’ Motivation in the E-Learning Environments for Programming Education
Abstract
In this paper, a pedagogical system to visualize the students’ motivation states for learning programming is proposed. This system can be used in E-Learning environments so that the instructors can assess the students’ motivation states in real-time. This system is based on the Systematical Information Education Method (SIEM) assessment standard proposed by Dohi [1], which is used to assess the students’ motivation to learn programming. In order to visualize the students’ motivation states, the correlations between the factors in the SIEM assessment standard are mapped on the width of the arcs of the graph whose nodes are the factors in the standard. As the preliminary experiments, the introductory programming courses were offered to the students in the art design and digital design faculties at two universities. It has been found that in order to maintain or raise students’ motivation it is more important to allow students to enjoy viewing the final results (artwork) of the programming than to make them strive to create more beautiful artwork.
