The Frontal Sinus

Abstract

■ Frontal sinus surgery is indicated after failure of conservative treatment.

■ In many patients an adequate drainage of the anterior ethmoid already leads to resolution of frontal sinus affection.

■ To avoid postoperative closure of the frontal sinus drainage, meticulous dissection within the confines of the frontal recess with minimal mucosal injury is of utmost importance.

■ The lateral mucosal linings of the frontal sinus infundibulum and frontal recess are of great importance in mucociliary clearance of the frontal sinus.

■ Maximal widening of the frontal sinus drainage with sufficient resection of the upper nasal septum is demanded for successful frontal sinus type III drainage.
