Unstable Moment Compounds

Abstract

Compounds with unstable 4f or 5f moments are reviewed. They can be classified into mixed valence compounds and heavy fermion compounds with many substances lying between these two cases. In the mixed valence compounds the bulk modulus exhibits in many cases strong softening as a function of temperature or a concentration parameter. In addition the Poisson ratio can be negative. Different cases of such behaviour are discussed,

In heavy fermion compounds the bulk modulus can also exhibit strong temperature or magnetic field dependence. This can be conveniently described with an electronic Grüneisen-parameter. Cerium- and Uranium- compounds belong to this category. The large Grüneisen-parameter arises from the strong volume dependence of the hybridization of localized f-electron and itinerant conduction electrons.
