Depressive Symptome sind weit verbreitet und auch innerhalb psychiatrischer Klassifikationssysteme vielerorts syndromal beteiligt. Insofern ist zu differenzieren zwischen der eigenständigen Diagnose einer Depression und depressiven Symptomen als Teil einer übergeordneten, anderen psychiatrischen Erkrankung. Um die Komplexität der Zuordnung zu verdeutlichen, muss Folgendes bedacht werden.
