Some New Aspects of the Resolution in Gaussian Pupil Optics
Chapter
Summary
An optical image is formed by the diffraction of an optical wave at the pupil. Rayleigh’s pupil gives Rayleigh’s limit of resolution, ε R, an important resolution criterion. A Gaussian pupil may give a resolution of less than ε R. The latest computer-aided optical working technology provides the required aspherical pupil with unprecedented speed and accuracy. In this paper, some new aspects of Gaussian pupil imagery are discussed in connection with its resolution, which is of the order of λ/10; this resolution is beyond Rayleigh’s criterion, which is of the order of λ. Also, a criterion for the Gaussian function constant, σ, is discussed.
