Nuclear Physics Far from Stability

Abstract

In the first part of the present lectures I will discuss, starting from a number of examples, a number of physics issues related to nuclear binding, nuclear stability and nuclear structure. Before exploring nuclei far from stability, I will discuss in a second part, how one has learned from past experimental studies to uncover nuclear structure phenomena and elementary modes of motion in the region near the valley of β-stability. In a third part, I will discuss how theoretical concepts have emerged from these data and have resulted in some generally accepted concepts about the underlying structures of atomic nuclei but also critically review the possibilities and inherent restrictions when trying to extrapolate those same concepts to nuclei lying far from the region of β-stable nuclei. Finally, in a fourth part, I will present a number of recent and exciting new experimental developments that guide us through the landscape of atomic nuclei up to high mountains and ridges of unstable nuclei.
