The Effect of Electric Fields on Autoionizing Resonances

Abstract

We have observed electric fields to have pronounced effects on autoionization resonances in the continuum region above the first ionization threshold. These effects are observed between field-coupled levels of opposite parity which have significantly different widths in zero-field. For example, [1] a relatively sharp even parity level which is nearly degenerate with a much broader odd level causes an interference dip in the broad level which deepens as the field is increased, until at higher fields the broad level is split into two components. The two components become “plus and minus” mixtures of the zero-field states, and repel one another as the field increases further. See Figures below.
