Abstract
The iodine laser in its present state of development can be considered as a reliable tool for research on laser-produced plasma. Its capability of producing subnanosecond pulses of good beam quality at the TW power level has been demonstrated. Design of a system with energies of approximately 100 kJ with pulse durations ranging from 100 ps to several ns seems to be entirely feasible on the basis of present flashlamp technology and laser design.
