Assessment of Facial Muscle Exercise Using Oral Cavity Rehabilitative Device

Abstract

This paper describes the assessment of facial muscle exercise using an oral cavity rehabilitative device. The physiological parameters investigated are labial closure strength (LCS), tongue strength (TS), right (ER) and left (EL) facial skin elasticity. A total of thirteen females aged forty years old and above with the mean age of 44.5 years old were recruited in the study. Subjects were given an oral rehabilitative device and were asked to perform lip stretching exercise using the device four times a day and takes three minutes per session. The measurement of LCS, TS and skin elasticity were measured using LCS, and tongue strength indicators in Newton (N) unit while the skin elasticity was measured using the Cutometer SEM 575 skin elasticity meter in ratio of pliability to the maximum extension. The physiological measurements were evaluated before and 14 weeks after the subjects performed the lip stretching exercise. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS statistical package version 12 for Window XP. Wilcoxon sampled test was used to evaluate whether the medians of the parameters measured differ significantly. The preliminary findings showed that there are significant positive difference (p<0.05) between the median value of the LCS, TS, EL and ER before (LCS=5.2 N, TS=2.7N, EL=0.29, ER=0.41) and (LCS = 11.3 N, TS=4.7N, EL=0.58, ER=0.51) after performing the lip stretching exercise. The lip stretching exercise while improving the LCS and TS will indirectly nourish the facial tissue and strengthen the facial skin elasticity.
