Analytical Model for Cross-Phase Modulation in Multi-span WDM Systems with Arbitrary Modulation Formats
Cross-phase modulation (XPM) is a major performance-limiting effect in high capacity wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) networks. In this contribution, we present closed expressions for fast and accurate calculation of XPM-induced field distortions. We validate the derived method for various modulation formats and apply it for simultaneous optimization of power and dispersion management. Efficient suppression of self-phase modulation (SPM) and XPM penalties is achieved by a novel dispersion compensation strategy.
