Towards Flexible and User-Friendly Management of Documents
Managing a document as one object in an information system, such as a digital library, is quite simple. A differentiated approach to store a document, for example, with respect to the logical structure and to different media types, is more complicated. For managing many documents with different structures the data model has to be flexible and robust. Another problem is the efficient import of documents and collections. To import structures and attributes from a document a mapping from the document structure onto the data model has to be defined. There are two approaches for mapping documents onto models of an information system. In the first case, the mapping is very simple and user-friendly, the problem is that some useful map definitions are not applicable. In the second approach, the mapping is very complicated and wide-ranged map definitions are possible, but many users have problems to define such a mapping. Because of these problems, we will show a generic and flexible data model and a simple import and mapping language to handle multimedia documents in a digital library.
