Zusammenfassung

Soziales Kapital ist in den Netzwerken, Vereinen und Assoziationen der Bürgergesellschaft verankert, die in der aktuellen Debatte über die Probleme moderner Gesellschaften in mehrfacher Hinsicht eine wichtige Rolle spielen: In ökonomischer Perspektive geht es um den Stellenwert sozialen Kapitals für marktwirtschaftliche Selbststeuerungsprozesse, in wohlfahrtstheoretischer Perspektive wird die Bedeutung der intermediären Instanzen als Produzenten sozialer Sicherheit und Wohlfahrt herausgestellt und in demokratietheoretischer Perspektive steht die Wirkung sozialen Kapitals auf die Funktionsfähigkeit demokratischer Entscheidungsprozesse im Mittelpunkt. Vor allem Robert Putnam (1993, 2000) und Ronald Inglehart (1989, 1997) betonten in den letzten Jahren die Bedeutsamkeit eines funktionsfähigen Systems intermediärer Organisationen und einer engen zwischenmenschlichen Kooperation für die Performanz und die Stabilität einer Demokratie.
