The ATM Network Reference Model

This chapter presents the ATM network reference model. The model defines the different types of network elements which make up an ATM network and the standard interfaces which should be used to interconnect them. Both the UNI (user-network interface) and NNI (network-node interface) are explained, as are the various different types of communication which may be supported by them (user information transfer, network control and network management). The chapter presents and discusses the various network interfaces, comparing and contrasting the ITU-T network reference model with the extensions of the model and slight differences proposed by ATM forum.
