We have heard how ATM is one of the most promising general purpose telecommunications transport technologies. We have discussed in detail the strengths of the cell switching technique at its core, and the incredible flexibility afforded to ATM transport networks by the ATM adaptation layer. The challenge now for equipment manufacturers and network planners alike is the realization of this promise. In this chapter we discuss some of the problems they will come up against.
