Caspar Barlaeus, Dutch Expansion, and the Sephardic Community in the Atlantic World: A Note on the Intellectual History of Amsterdam in the Seventeenth Century

  • Ineke Phaf-Rheinberger

In the seventeenth century, Amsterdam and Dutch Brazil were closely connected by way of contacts between the respective Sephardic Communities. This is mentioned in the work of Caspar Barlaeus, professor at the Athenaeum Illustre, which displays some of the contradictions between freedom of religion and its limitations. In this chapter, some aspects of the relations toward Jews are depicted as characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age of overseas expansion.
