Glucose is one of the basic currencies of energy in the body. Evaluation of hypermetabolic tumors is the most common indication for a PET study. The degree of uptake within a location is related to the metabolic uptake and activity associated with that location. During activity, skeletal muscles have increased metabolic demands with increased uptake of glucose. The inflammatory response also has a high metabolic demand, which can be localized with this imaging modality.
