Pain Issues in Individuals with Limited Ability to Communicate Due to Neurocognitive Impairments
The treatment and assessment of pain in the neurocognitively impaired is challenging. While self-report is the most reliable way to assess pain in patients, those with neurocognitive impairment open have trouble communicating with healthcare providers. Treatment of pain in this population relies heavily on a multidisciplinary approach. Certain medications can cause further sedation, cognitive impairment, and should be carefully considered using a risk/benefit analysis. Caregivers can play an important role in management of the neurocognitively impaired patient, including safe dispensing of medications.
