The Bogomils and Iconography

  • Elena Ene D-Vasilescu
Part of the New Approaches to Byzantine History and Culture book series (NABHC)

This chapter introduces the Bogomil sect and shows how the depiction of Anna Galaktotrophousa was a reaction to ideas propagated by its members. It points out that theological ideas have always informed iconography but that so far nothing has been written on the connection between Bogomilism and visual scenes referring to milk-nursing.
